"I must focus more on fitting in. On obeying. On pleasing.

"Doctor Kobe has taken an interest in seeing me develop. I can turn that interest to my advantage. I can use it to escape the fear of being 'vanished' like the Project girls that do not meet the grade.

"I am developing. I need new clothes. I chose clothes that fit my new shape and that fit the Asian culture I now live in.

"I am learning to excel at tea ceremony. To walk tip-toe and speak in a sugary voice. To delight.

"I did a bad thing. The only thing a prisoner cannot do but must try. I tried to escape.

"They caught me and took me to the doctor. My doctor. Doctor Kobe. He frightened me. The fear opened me up. Then he tied me open.

"He suspended me and told me things. I listened. I could not be closed. I could not do anything. 

"He saw me opened and he put instruction in me. Helplessness had a peace to it. Lotus flowers with their roots trapped in the water."

"I've always been in love with nature. Wildlife. Wetlands. The turn of the dawn into day into dusk. And, especially, flowers.

"The flowers in the garden pools are my horizon here. They are lotus flowers. They are pink and lush and wet. They are the mystical symbol for peace and harmony in the soul of the world.

"I look at them and wonder if I have that peace in me. I wonder if I will find it here, as I begin to grow.

"For now, I feel so separate. But every sunrise over the lotus makes the Project walls glister with pink."

"This place is changing. Getting brighter by the day. I am changing too.

"A tan. A tawny look to my hair. A certain smell my skin is flowering with. And a blooming heat inside me. The winter of my imprisonment still makes for many cold moments, but a rich summer is hatching.

"I am starting to feel like a part of paradise. It frightens me that I am not very scared of that."

"I now have a rival, too. A big, red-haired Russian fashion queen. Her name is Tonya. She has the grace and command of a princess, and this prison is her palace.

"I worry. We are supposed to compete. The girls who behave the most pleasing and whose bodies develop the most are rewarded. The girls who do not respond to the serum, or who do not please, vanish.

"Tonya is gorgeous, and gorgeous is hard to compete with. I sometimes fear I will disappear in the shadow of her glamour."

"At least I have my best friend here. My best friend since forever, Nikki McCay. She got caught by The Girl Project right before I did.

"We are both captives. Both warming and transforming with the project's serum inside us. But being with her sets me free a little.

"Nikki tells me she wants to spend every moment of every day with me. Chilling and reading and eating the big, big, big meals the serum makes us hunger for. I get where she's coming from.

"We can use all the freedom we can get."

"He is one of the doctors here. One of the inventors of the serum they put in me and the other girls. He seems much more than just that, though. He seems in control.

"He is confident. Capable. So calm. And he pays a lot of attention to me.

"His name is Doctor Inaki Kobe and he seems in control, no matter what situation he is in. No matter how I act. He seems to have all the control I need."

"It is getting warmer here. And I hear that here is Singapore. It should get very warm.

"The air smells sweeter as the flowers bloom. The colors are all brighter. The whole world is coming out of its cocoon, along with the fresh butterflies.

"My prison is turning into paradise. I wonder what I will have to turn into."

"There are many gardens here. Tea houses. Temples. But there are four high walls and locked doors. And so I believe the men in black who watch me, when they tell me this is my prison.

"I hope for escape. Any escape.

"And I hope that the serum they injected me with - the hormone formula - does not make my body a prison too."
